What is CMS
By krogager
A content management system (CMS) is a system to manage content. The description usually covers a systems to edit and publish content on web pages. Here, however, is used the more specific designation of web content management system. Often a distinction is made between a standard CMS and a custom-developed CMS. * A standard CMS is based on a standardized platform, which can be either open source or developed and owned by a specific supplier, which requires a license for use. * A specially developed CMS will often be designed by the user or tailored by a supplier. A CMS is used to edit, organize and publish the text, images, documents and other multimedia files. A modern CMS contains features for both user management and workflow management. In recent years, content management systems based on open source software gained ground in that they contain the most basic functions and allows the user to expand with any deficiencies. But they may suffer due to the shortage of a commercially committet company behind the development.
Examples of open source content management systems are Drupal and Joomla.
